FedEx will swap out 2,000 diesel-fuel trucks for electric vehicles built by Harbinger, a U.S. startup. These medium-duty EVs are slated for a nationwide rollout across the United States and Canada by late 2027.
Harbinger estimates that FedEx will save $40 million annually in fuel costs thanks to the new electric vehicles (EVs). The 2,000 medium-duty trucks, costing over $200 million, are designed to last 20 years, during which they are projected to save a total of $800 million in fuel expenses.
By reducing diesel use, FedEx’s new electric trucks are set to prevent over 1.7 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions over their lifespan. This initiative aligns with the company’s target to fully electrify its pickup and delivery fleet by 2040.
Harbinger’s electric Class 5 and Class 6 trucks are available in three wheelbase lengths, from 158 inches to 208 inches. They are powered by an all-in-one electric drive unit that houses the motor, transmission, and differential, delivering 440 horsepower and 1,140 pound-feet of torque.
The startup has developed a 35-kilowatt-hour battery pack operating at 800 volts, configurable in four-to-six-pack arrangements. This setup provides a practical range of 140 to 210 miles on a full charge, with a 20-to-80% charge achievable in under an hour using a DC fast charger.
Harbinger plans to manufacture and deliver all 2,000 vehicles within the next 18 months. The electric trucks start at $103,000 before incentives, with an optional range-extender configuration available.
This development means that FedEx will be able to reduce its environmental impact while also saving on fuel costs. The switch to electric trucks is a significant step towards the company’s goal of electrifying its entire fleet, and it will have a notable impact on the company’s operations and financial performance.
FedEx’s order includes a mix of models from Harbinger’s all-electric vehicle lineup, which offers affordability, durability, and best-in-class 50-degree wheel cut and 42-foot turning diameter. Harbinger’s electric trucks have a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) ranging from 16,000 to 26,000 lbs.
They are designed to provide a reliable and efficient service, and their features will help FedEx achieve its objectives. The company’s decision to invest in electric vehicles is a key part of its strategy to reduce its environmental footprint and improve its bottom line.
