The Strategic Petroleum Reserve has dropped to levels not seen in decades. America now holds just 298.7 million barrels in reserve, the lowest level since 1983. The drop comes as the country continues to draw down emergency stocks to offset disruptions in global oil markets. Aside from a brief détente, the critical water way has effectively been closed for months. This closure tightened global supply, pushing national average gasoline prices to $4.01 per gallon. That is 87 cents more than a year ago. Drivers in California are feeling the squeeze even harder, paying around $5.59 per gallon.
To help ease the shock, 32 members of the International Energy Agency announced plans to release 400 million barrels of oil from their emergency reserves in March. Around 290 million barrels have already been released by July. The war in Iran continues, however. This has resulted in America’s Strategic Petroleum Reserve dropping to 298.7 million barrels. The outlet reports that the drop of 6.1 million barrels in the past week puts the reserve at the lowest level since January of 1983.
The United States had around 415 million barrels in reserve before the war. It will only have approximately 243 million barrels left by the time the previously announced release is completed. That number is below the 70 million barrels needed to operate the reserve safely. A former Obama administration official said he wasn’t worried about the stability of the reserve or the nation’s ability to do another drawdown if it were needed. The reserve has a capacity of 714 million barrels, making it currently only 42% full.
It is hard to see the Trump administration agreeing to a list of demands from Iran. The country’s Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council announced conditions for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. These include never threatening the country, ending the war, and lifting naval blockades. Iran is also demanding the United States pay reparations, remove sanctions, and release frozen assets. The stalemate likely won’t be resolved soon, perhaps necessitating new releases from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.
