The Vinfast VF MPV 7, a new seven-seat electric MPV, is set to join India’s growing niche market. With a length of 4,740mm, width of 1,872mm, and height of 1,734mm, it fits well within its segment, offering a balanced presence and practicality.
Styling and Practicality
The MPV 7 features a distinct V-shaped light signature and dark 19-inch wheels, giving it an SUV-like appearance. Its 180mm ground clearance and upright design further enhance this aesthetic. The rear boasts a distinct light cluster and a chunky, upright look, blending practicality with style. Notably, the MPV 7 will offer a 90-litre frunk as an accessory, adding to its storage versatility alongside its generous boot space.
Boot space is generous, offering 100 liters with all seats up, expanding to 550 liters with the third row folded, and a maximum of 1,520 liters with the second row also folded. The flat lip is slightly high, but the boxy shape allows for efficient stacking of items, making it ideal for family use.
Interior and Space
Inside, the MPV 7 has a modern EV feel with a horizontal theme and textured plastic panels. The 10.1-inch touchscreen controls most functions, though a small instrument cluster would be a welcome addition. The cabin offers ample storage, including a deep center armrest, layered shelves, and large cupholders, ensuring practicality for long journeys.
The 2,840mm wheelbase and boxy shape create a spacious interior. The flat floor and large doors ease access to the second row, which features wide seats with five-step recline and soft bolstering. Legroom and headroom are ample, even for taller passengers, though center armrests and sunshades are absent. The second row also includes AC vents and Type A and C chargers for added convenience.
The third row is surprisingly usable, with high seating and good headroom. The tumble-fold action and sliding function enhance accessibility, though charging ports are missing here. Rear occupants benefit from rear AC controls and cupholders, ensuring comfort for all passengers.
The MPV 7’s 60.13kWh battery offers a 500km MIDC range, translating to around 400-420km in real-world conditions. It supports 80kW DC fast charging, enabling a 10-70% charge in 30 minutes.
Powered by a single front-driven motor delivering 201PS and 280Nm, the MPV 7 accelerates from 0 to 100kmph in under 9 seconds. During a brief test drive at the Vinfast plant in Vietnam, the vehicle demonstrated predictable power delivery and a controlled Sport mode. Traction control was noticeable during hard acceleration, a common trait in front-driven EVs, ensuring stability under demanding conditions.
The MPV 7 offers three regen modes, with the middle setting being the most natural. While it lacks one-pedal driving, the high regen setting is well-calibrated for stop-start traffic, providing a smooth driving experience. The steering is light and easy to handle, though it could benefit from more feel at the center. The ride is firm, typical of EVs with large wheels, and there is some lean around bends. Braking performance is predictable, aligning with the vehicle’s comfort-focused tuning.
Features and Safety
The MPV 7’s full suite of features and safety equipment will be revealed after its launch. However, it is expected to include ADAS, 360-degree cameras, and six airbags, ensuring a high level of safety for all occupants. The Vietnam-spec model we tested included a 10.1-inch screen, auto headlamps, LED lighting, and telescopic steering adjustment, hinting at a well-equipped interior.
Additional features such as wireless charging, ventilated seats, and a sunroof would be welcome additions to enhance the overall experience, particularly for long-distance travel.
Driving Experience and Verdict
During a brief test drive at the Vinfast plant in Vietnam, the MPV 7 demonstrated a good driving position with a low sill and large windscreen. The steering position may take some adjustment, but the telescopic steering adjustment helps find a comfortable setup.
