Renault has introduced a contemporary rendition of the classic Renault 8 Gordini from the 1960s. This electric concept borrows heavily from the original four-door family sedan but features a wide stance and only two doors. Even with these updates, the electric vehicle’s propulsion system remains faithful to the legacy, utilizing a rear-mounted motor and rear-wheel drive.
The Look
The Renault 8 Gordini concept sits low and has a broad stance that recalls rally cars from the past. At the front, a quirky central hood indentation paired with six round headlights creates an unmistakable profile identical to the original. Constructed from scratch on a modern all-electric platform, the vehicle features substantial 19-inch wheels up front and larger 20-inch rims at the back.
The Renault 8 Gordini concept possesses a 50-inch-tall carbon fiber body and a powerful 270 hp electric motor. Thanks to the instant torque typical of electric powertrains, the car promises to be an exciting drive. The cabin holds only two passengers, with a brushed aluminum strip running from pillar to pillar that contains six round gauges as the dashboard.
Inside and Amenities
A second brushed aluminum panel holds the various toggle switches located between the two seats. Renault states that the interior layout was created to cut out distractions, allowing the driver to concentrate on the road. A stopwatch is situated in the center of the dash. Bucket seats are standard, featuring blue corduroy on the center and backrests, while Alcantara-covered door panels provide a racing-oriented environment.
Renault doesn’t have plans to bring the 8 Gordini concept to production, yet they invested significant effort into its creation. More than 300 sketches were entered by the brand’s designers in an internal contest, but only two advanced to 2:5 scale models. Subsequently, the best elements from each design were merged to produce the final vehicle.
The Renault 8 Gordini Concept makes its debut today at the Renault Carwalk and will appear on stage at the Paris Motor Show, which takes place from 12 to 18 October. This two-door show car is a striking display that draws inspiration from the 1960s original, distinguished by a unique design and features.
