General Motors is enhancing its OnStar in-vehicle assistant with an AI-based intelligence layer, aiming to provide more personalized and proactive experiences for drivers. The company announced this update in an October 21 press release.

AI Integration for Enhanced Assistance

The new AI features will combine real-time vehicle data with contextual information and connected services via OnStar. This integration will also extend to the OnStar mobile app starting in 2027 and the OnStar Fleet Intelligence platform.

The AI-powered assistant will first appear in the 2027 Cadillac Lyriq electric SUV through an over-the-air update, with plans to roll out to other GM vehicles later.

Personalized Support and Vehicle Insights

Launched in 1996, OnStar initially provided roadside assistance and support for issues like flat tires. With the addition of conversational AI, the platform will offer personalized assistance and deeper insights, enabling it to handle complex tasks that general assistants cannot.

The OnStar AI Assistant will act as a vehicle-specific owner’s manual, helping customers understand safety features like lane-keep assist and answering usage questions. For electric vehicle owners, it can also monitor real-time range and plan charging stops.

Unified App and Family Features

The updated OnStar mobile app will replace the existing OnStar Guardian and individual Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, and GMC companion apps, providing a unified experience across all GM models and devices.

The new OnStar also supports connected cameras, automatically recording incidents triggered by events like an aggressive horn honk. These recordings are securely uploaded to the OnStar app, and users receive an alert to review the event.

Additionally, the OnStar Family feature allows family members to share destinations, coordinate pickups, monitor other family vehicles, and receive safety alerts.

Privacy and Control

GM has addressed privacy concerns by implementing opt-out policies and giving customers control over data sharing. Features are only activated if users choose to enable them, and they can be turned off at any time.

The camera, microphone, location, and AI permissions have clear indicators and simple settings, ensuring customers have full control over their data. All camera recordings are encrypted and have time limits, with GM unable to access them.
