Disabled drivers eligible for a Blue Badge can now apply or renew online via the UK Government website. This permit allows parking in designated disabled bays, free parking at on-street meters and pay-and-display spaces, and up to three hours on single or double yellow lines when displaying a parking clock. The Blue Badge is designed to assist those with mobility issues by enabling them to park closer to their destinations, though restrictions still apply in areas like residents’ bays and EV charging points, which are clearly marked.

According to the Department for Transport (DfT), completing the online application takes less than 30 minutes. Previously, applicants had to mail documents, leading to delays. A survey revealed that receiving a badge took 17 days on average, or 28 days if a medical assessment was required.

The new system enables applicants to upload all necessary documents, including photos and proof of identity, directly. The process generally takes 13 minutes, extending closer to 30 minutes if additional details are necessary.

To apply, individuals need their current badge details (if renewing), a digital or signed photograph, their National Insurance number, proof of identification, proof of benefits (if applicable), and proof of residence. The application fee is £10 in England, £20 in Scotland, and free in Wales. Badges remain valid for up to three years.

In Northern Ireland, the process varies, with a £10 fee. A separate link is available for applications from this region.
