The Porsche 550 Spyder ranks among the German marque’s most historic models and remains extremely costly, with individual cars achieving auction prices exceeding £4 million today, making them largely unattainable for typical collectors in market.
Created for racing, Porsche produced approximately 90 units of the 550 Spyder from 1953 to 1956, achieving victories on global circuits.
James Dean, the renowned actor, was the most notable owner of a 550 Spyder, and his fatal accident in one in 1955 heightens the intrigue surrounding this rare Porsche model.
A more affordable option
A partnership between Porsche and Hedley Studios aims to make owning a 550 Spyder more accessible through the Hedley Studios Porsche 550 J, an 80 percent-scale replica of the iconic race car.
Measuring 2.9 meters long and 1.2 meters wide, the 550 J features a lightweight tubular spaceframe chassis and carbon fiber body, weighing just 330kg, or 350kg with the optional RS Pack.

In place of a flat-four engine, the 550 J’s rear houses an 11hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery, with the RS Pack boosting power to nearly 21hp.
Over 1,300 new parts were developed for the 550 J, including alloy wheels designed to mimic the original rims, paired with EV-specific tires for authentic design and performance.
Classic looks, modern technology
The Hedley 550 J has a top speed of 40mph in standard form, while the RS Pack model can reach 50mph, with a range of 30 miles on a fully charged battery.
Four driving modes allow the power output to be tailored from ‘Novice’ to ‘Race’, with Bilstein coilovers added for modern performance and Brembo disc brakes replacing the drums used in the 1950s.
The Hedley Studios 550 J starts at £83,400 including VAT in the UK, with production limited to 250 units and initial deliveries scheduled for spring 2027.
